Fun things to do during a Snowstorm

Cynthia Simpson

When winter arrives, so does the snow and at times lots of it! During a snow storm, we are confined to our homes to wait it out. To keep yourself occupied some people like to do things like rearranging their furniture, clean out closets or do the laundry. That all sound like work to me! I just want to relax and do things that don't require too much energy. Here are a few fun things you can do while waiting out a snow storm or on a day off from work.

Netflix and Chill

If you don't have Netflix, I suggest you make the investment. Netflix is doing the damn thing with their original programming and large selection of movies. Here are a few shows I suggest you watch.
Chewing Gum, Black Mirror, Doctor Foster, Stranger Things, Peaky Blinders, The Fall, Happy Valley, The Get Down

Catch up on reading

I can't say I am a huge reader, but I do love coffee table magazines like The Gentle Woman or Kinfolk. My goal this year is to read at least one book every 2-3 months. I gravitate to mostly fiction, suspense/mystery books that keep you on the edge of your seat. I've recently taken an interest in books about interior design, ceramics and space structure.  If you have any suggestions on books to read please send them my way!

Primp & Pamper

There is nothing like a fresh coat of nail polish! This gives you something to smile about while you're twiddling your fingers waiting for the time to pass by. I constantly change my nail color because 1.My manicure only lasts 3 days max because my fingers are constantly in shea butter, 2. I can no longer use gel nail polish because it RUINS my nails (No matter how much I admire the shiny finish)!

Listen to music

If you live in Brooklyn, I am sure you have a record player somewhere in your apartment. Dust that bad boy off and  play some tunes! You can also jam out to your favorite Spotify or Soundcloud playlist if you don't collect vinyl. I'm always looking for new sounds and dope artists to vibe out to. Who are you listening to now?

Play video games

My husband is a gamer with an impressive collection of video games. I not only enjoy watching him play games like Metal Gear Solid, Tomb Raider and Fallout 4, I also enjoy playing as well. The most recent game that I was totally into was INSIDE. INSIDE is a puzzle-platformer adventure video game developed and published by Playdead. You play a young boy dropped in this super spooky, dark world, surrounded by deformed lab experiments, zombies, and mad scientists whom all want to kill you. It's a game changer. Get it... cus we talking about games. :)

What do you like to do when you're stuck in the house? Send me new music suggestions, video games, books, nail polish colors that you think I should check out!

xx

THANKSGIVING WITH MARTHA STEWART

Cynthia Simpson

With Thanksgiving Day a few days away, my plans are to go back home to Philadelphia where my mom will prepare her traditional candy yams, greens, string beans, mac & cheese and not to mention her mouthwatering turkey! I love to cook and help my mom out in the kitchen, but when it comes to making the entire Thanksgiving meal for my family, even I am a little intimidated.

Are you interested in cooking for Thanksgiving this year, but haven't a clue on how to get started? Well not to fear, Martha Stewart is here to help you out! Martha has collaborated with meal delivery service, Marley Spoon, that will send you everything you need including step-by- step instructions for a full Thanksgiving spread.

My friend Kate Storey, Senior Features Editor at Hearst Digital, decided to take on the challenge and ordered the Thanksgiving meal box. Kate informed me that she was not that experienced in the kitchen nor has she ever cooked a turkey before, but regardless, my husband and I were happy to be invited as her taste testers. We arrived to dinner at 7pm equipped with good appetites.  The spread was certainly impressive - A full turkey cooked to perfection, creamy mashed potatoes, roasted brussels sprout salad with pomegranates and cider vinaigrette dressing, classic stuffing with herbs and dried cranberries. Then for dessert we had homemade apple pie with vanilla ice cream. Everything was moist, full of flavor and just incredible!

Here is a short video of the delicious meal and our wonderful evening.  For more details about Kate's cooking experience, read the full article she wrote for Delish

Riis Park Beach Bazaar

Cynthia Simpson

This weekend I went out to Riis Park Beach Bazaar to get away from the city and feel some sand between my toes. Even though this beach was far ( you have to take the A train to the end of the line to Rockaway Park Beach, then take a Shuttle, then you take a short bus ride) it was definitely worth the trip! At Riis Park Beach Bazaar,  there is a ton of fun activities for everyone to enjoy.

THE BEACH
You can enjoy the beach sun and be safe from all the rays. At Riis, you can rent beach chairs and umbrellas for a small fee. You  have the option to reserve them in advance or get them when you arrive. The beach was not too crowded and there are life guards surfing the waves.

On the boardwalk it's a party with Dj's mixing and live performances from up and coming artists.

ACTIVITIES
There is so much to do on the board walk. You can rent bikes, three wheelers, relax in some banana hammocks and even do a little shopping.

FOOD AND DRINK
If you get hungry there are plenty of delicious foods you can choose from. There is also a pretty stocked bar with frozen drinks and beer. Everything is cash only but don't worry there are ATMs close by for your convenience.

WEDDING DAY

Cynthia Simpson

The day of the wedding has arrived! Though it was hot and sticky, not a drop of rain was in site and I had the best time of my life.  Having your family and closest friends all in one place to celebrate YOU is kind of a big deal. Not to mention, the months and months of planning what you only imagined your whole life actually come together is kind of extraordinary.

The details of the day are what mattered most to me. The time does goes fast, but if you have someone keeping track of when and where you need to be, you can really enjoy getting ready with your bridal party. Thank goodness for my beautiful, organized and taskmaster of a sister. Yay Andrea!

Here are a few special moments that made my day complete and made me smile.

My crown of flowers, made by The Bloom Bar, were made of fresh baby's breath sprinkled with golden flecks. I really loved how light and delicate it looked in my curly locks but it was really durable as well.

Celebrity makeup artist and close friend, Lynette Broom, made, my mother, sister and I look like movie stars. She's the best at what she does. It was such an honor to have her there for my wedding. She is so talented and made me feel really beautiful. Best part was, no matter how hot it was outside, my makeup did not move all day!

My bridesmaids were such huge supporters throughout my relationship with Valery and I wanted to give them something special to wear for the day (and the rest of their lives). These beautiful handmade pendents By Boe were the perfect gift. The pendants and chains are 14K gold, light and delicate. When each of my bridesmaids opened their personal gift, they squealed with delight and even cried.

My bouquet was magnificent! Willow & Thistle really made my vision come to life. They even allowed my mother to contribute flowers from her garden which made the bouquet much more special.

My amazing gown was made by Andrea Pitter, Owner and Designer of Pantora Bridal boutique in Brooklyn, NY. She is so talented and gifted. The dress fit like a glove and was so whimsical and light. I felt like Cinderella, minus the mice.

We had such am amazing day and I am so excited for what life has in store. It's a day that we won't forget. Thank you everyone who made this day so special! Love you!

WELCOME TO MIAMI

Cynthia Simpson

The count down begins! Before I jump the broom, I wanted to spend some much needed time with my girls. Miami was just the place to get away and soak in the sun.

HOTEL
We stayed at The Jetset Franklin right in the heart of South Beach on Collins Ave. The hotel has loft style apartments that are fully furnished with a kitchen, perfect for large groups or families. They provide fresh bath and beach towels everyday and the people that work there are extremely helpful and accommodating. The hotel is a short walk from the beach and nightlife.

When you walk into the lobby they have a cool café called The Hub, which serves gourmet coffee, delicious pastries and sandwiches. This was a bonus, especially after a long night out and about.

BEACH FUN
The beaches in Miami are beautiful and the water is so clear! If you are like me and love laying out in the sun, don't slack on the sunscreen even if you have darker skin. The sun can and will burn you regardless of this crazy idea that having more melanin means you are protected from the sun.  I really love CVS Sheer Mist Spray. It's oil free and doesn't leave a white film that some sunscreens leave behind. It's also really easy to put on and has a pleasant scent.

Since I have been planning my wedding, I recently discovered the power of meditation. It has opened my mind and has given me a new way to focus on the things that are important in life. I am telling you, meditation is an amazing tool that will change your life and help you see things in a new light. The beach was a perfect place to get centered and in touch with myself. I will write a full blog post about what I have learned and how you can get into meditating.

GREAT EATS
There are alot of great spots to eat in Miami; Havana 1957 on Española Way is one you have to try out! They have great food and tasty mojitos served in cute mason jars.

El Pub, in Little Havana, is a Cuban restaurant with a diner type feel. They have large portions and the best Cuban coffee I have ever tasted. The sweet plantains and cuban sandwiches hit the spot after a relaxing afternoon on the beach.

COOL SPOTS
Wynwood Walls is one of the coolest places in Miami where you can see large scale graffiti art work all in one place. The murals go beyond the walls and into the neighborhood displaying expressive creativity from local artist. This area gave me a Williamsburg feel with the outdoor seating areas and young hipster crowd.

We stopped into the Wood Tavern for drinks at a really great price. The outdoor seating area, tasty tacos and life size jenga made this bar a place to remember. They even had portable cell chargers that you could carry around with you!

Miami was a great place to have my bachelorette weekend and I really appreciate my ladies for taking the time to make me feel so special. Love you!
